Walking into a gym when you're not confident is hard. I remember hovering near the dumbbells, convinced everyone was watching me.
Most women I train locally (bodyfactory enfield or energie fitness chingford) say the same thing - they want to get fit, but just walking into the gym makes them nervous. That "where do I even start?" feeling. The fear of looking silly. The worry that everyone else knows what they're doing.
Sarah from Enfield Town told me: "I'd drive to the car park, sit there for 10 minutes, then drive home again. Just couldn't make myself go in."
The most common worries I hear:
"I don't know how to use any of the equipment"
"I feel like everyone's looking at me"
"What if I do something wrong?"
"All the confident people make me feel worse"
Every woman who's shared these concerns has overcome them. Lisa from Bush Hill Park now walks in like she owns the place.
What's working for women I train:
1. Start with a friendly face
Having someone show you around makes a massive difference. Just knowing where things are takes away half the stress.
2. Learn the basics properly
You don't need 100 exercises. Master 5 basic moves and you'll have the confidence to walk in anywhere.
3. Have a proper plan
Nothing worse than wandering around not knowing what to do next. A clear plan means you focus on your workout, not on worrying.
4. Find your quiet spot
Every gym has less busy areas. Emma from Southgate started in the stretching corner, then gradually explored other sections.
Some real feedback:
"I used to stick to the treadmill in the corner. Now I'm deadlifting in the middle of the gym floor!" - Melissa, Enfield
"What helped me was realising nobody actually cares what I'm doing - they're all too busy worrying about themselves!" - Priya, Chingford, East London.
Want to build your confidence? Here's what you can do today:
Start small - Even just checking out the changing rooms is a win
Bring a friend - Everything's easier with support
Book an induction - The staff are there to help
Go during quiet times - Usually mid-morning or early afternoon
Everyone started somewhere. Even those confident people once had their first day.
I help women go from gym-scared to gym-confident every day at BodyFactory in Enfield. Book a free chat if you want someone who understands.
